I am using Jane's Book Talks with my 7th graders. I now know exactly what each student is reading. If they try to fudge their way through the talk, you can tell immediately. The students do their talks with me during SSR. What I enjoy most about the talks is the fact that I get to talk one-on-one with students; no AR program will ever be able to accomplish that!

I am the English Dept.Chair for a diverse-ability, multi-ethnic high school with 1,100 students. Jane's program is the best I've seen to use with these students, because it reaches all ability levels; once they master the basics, they can go on to "weaving," as Jane calls it, and soar! But they need a format they can understand, and this works! We are implenting her program department-wide next year, after having had great results piloting it this year.

Our entire K-12 school district has adopted Jane's writing unit as a guide to improve the quality of writing. We've devised a packet for teachers in grades 3, 6, and 9 to help them use the terminology and elements of good writing. Our district-wide writing assessment in those three grade levels revolves around Jane's writing unit. We love the results!!!

Jane Schaffer possesses in abundance the greatest gift of the master teacher. Blessed with a dry sense of humor, she is a born story teller. She'll make you laugh; she'll make you a better teacher. Jane transforms the craft into an art.

As a Director of Curriculum for a large school district, I am now sold on the Schaffer model. Teachers attending the workshops have a good time, think hard, and leave with something they can use in their classroom the next day.
