Analytical Response to Literature, Phase II Webinar Series

Time Zone:

Training Location:

Phase II, Practicum and Progression: Once teachers have introduced and students have practiced the foundational writings skills and process of the Jane Schaffer Academic Writing Program®, teachers will begin observing how their students’ abilities develop at different rates of progress. This occurrence is natural, and teachers must be patient with their students’ cognitive development, especially with regard to the writing process. Remember, “it takes as long as it takes.” Don’t rush a student’s processing time. Students can be successful with Phase I for multiple years and even those who are college-bound. However, when you recognize growth, don’t stall or stagnate a student’s readiness.

The five reasons I know some of my students are ready for Phase II:

  1. They no longer confuse concrete detail with commentary.
  2. They understand and answer the writing prompt in an organized, logical, and fluid manner.
  3. They are proficient at choosing specific, relevant, and appropriate concrete details from their reading, observations, and experiences.
  4. Their commentary is developing and starting to impress me; I'm seeing some insight.
  5. Their writing is grammatically sound with few mistakes.

If you can answer "YES" to those five questions, our Phase II training, Practicum and Progression, will train you how to build momentum with these students through the following writing strategies:

  • Developing the Two-Chunk Paragraph Without Redundancy
  • Weaving Concrete Detail and Commentary
  • Internalizing the Process and, Thereby, Lessening the Number of Graphic Organizers
  • Introducing Style: Method and Meaning
  • Designing Effective Writing Prompts
  • Varying Sentence Types, Sentence Lengths, and Sentence Openings

This training is a prerequisite to Phase III. If you haven’t taken the official Phase I training, please do before registering for Phase II or Phase III.
