Tiered Writing for Elementary (Bundle)

Time Zone:

Training Location:

Our new elementary bundle consists of five books, each book guiding teachers toward effective strategies for teaching elementary students in grades PK-5 on how to write academically with precision and confidence.

Book 1: Methodology, Essential Components, Early Learning. The introductory teacher’s guide is critical to understanding the Jane Schaffer Academic Writing Program and its methodology. Teachers will learn strategies to guide their students in the “write” direction by teaching the basic components of JSWP through reading, pictures, and discussion. Not only does Book 1 have “Early Learning” ideas, but also this guide presents teachers with our “Scope and Sequence” and the JSWP® Rubrics. Teachers can also learn through this guide how to write effective prompts and how to teach students to decode writing prompts.

Book 2: Personal and Fictional Narrative. The narrative mode is perhaps the most popular for elementary teachers at the beginning of the school year. This guide will provide guidance on the elements of the personal narrative, the different types, and multiple prompts. Strategies include “Discovering My Topic,” the “Story Mountain,” Concrete Details that Describe, and Meaningful Commentary. For the Fictional Narrative, the guide provides strategies for building characters, setting, conflict, climax, and resolution.

Book 3: Expository Nonliterary. This guide is also a popular choice because it is divided into Informational Non-Text-Based, “How-To,” Summary, and Text-Based writing. Students will learn how to start with a chunk in first grade and end with a multi-paragraph essay in third through fifth grades. Using the gradual release model, this guide provides models, exemplars, and practice assignments. Teachers  will learn strategies to teach their students how to write a working thesis, an introduction, and conclusion.

Book 4: Opinion/Persuasive. Book 4 follows Book 3 for a definitive reason – to build upon the expository essay and make writing persuasive. Elementary students will learn how to select persuasive concrete details and to determine transitions that guide readers through a logical but simple argument.

Book 5: Response to Literature. Because Response to Literature demands more commentary than the other modes of discourse, we reserve this guide to the end so that students will have practiced with the other modes. That being said, some teachers start with Response to Literature! And that’s OK – because like the other guides, this guide provides strategies as to how to start simply be decoding the prompt, reading and annotating a text, gathering CDs, generating CM, and shaping writing through editing and revising.

Books 2-5 include introductions and conclusions for essay writing and grammar lessons throughout. All guides have perforated pages at the end with the famous JSWP graphic organizers!

Each book is priced at $69.99, but if you purchase the bundle, the price is $314.99.
